The 3rd edition of Let's Talk about Science was a success! We had an attendance of over 50 people, including students, professors, researchers, and community members. We had talks delivered by our SPIE Visiting Lecturer, Professor Reuven Gordon, by Professor Nuno Santos, and Professor Sofia Miguens.

Let's Talk About Science! 2nd Edition
Here are some pictures of the 2nd Edition of Let's Talk About Science! An afternoon dedicated to Science, where we had the pleasure to welcome the SPIE Invited Lecturer, Prof. Silvano Donati, who gave a talk about self-mixing interferometry. Different perspectives about Science, development of new technologies and ethics were addressed by Prof. Alípio Jorge and Dr. Rui Vieira da Cunha.
22nd Scientific Meeting
On 23rd of June we had the pleasure to receive Dr. Miguel González-Herráez, from the Universidad de Alcalá, Spain. He gave us a talk about slow light in optical fibers. Here are some pictures of the event.
21st Scientific Meeting
On the 30th of April we had the pleasure to host another Scientific Meeting. This time, the talk was held by Dr. Susana Barbosa, from INESC TEC and it was about Radon. It was really a great talk, with a topic different from the ones we are used to discuss here within our group.
Social Event & General Meeting
On April, 29th we had a Social Event and a General Meeting. We had the pleasure to invite new students to have lunch with us, so they could learn about the Chapter activities and be in direct contact with the Chapter Members. We also had the great pleasure to have the company of our supervisor, Prof. José Luís Santos during this Pizza Lunch! In the General Meeting, for members only, several issues were discussed regarding new activities that will be done in this International Year of Light. Soon we will have more details!
20th Scientific Meeting
Last Thursday we had the visit of Dr. Jayanta Haldar, from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, in India. Here are some pictures of his talk, entitled "Bacterial cell membrane: Targeting the Achilles' heel to combat drug-resistance and infections"!
19th Scientific Meeting
Last Monday we had the visit of Dr. Francesco Baldini and Dr. Francesco Chiavaioli from the Istituto di Fisica Applicata "Nello Carrara", in Italy. Here are some pictures of our Scientific Meeting!
Open Days @ FCUP

18th Scientific Meeting
On December, 3rd we had the last scientific meeting of this year. Held by Dr. Lars Montelius, the general director of INL in Braga, this meeting was a great sucess! It was a great pleasure for the Student Chapter to see so many people attending this meeting! Not only the theme was very interesting, but also Dr. Lars is a very carismatic person and a it is a delight to listen to him. Here are some pictures from the event!
Let's Talk About Science!
Last week we had the first edition of Let's Talk About Science. Dr Lorenzo Pavesi was our invited lecturer from SPIE. We also had a talk given by Dr. Nuno Peres and by Dr. João Relvas. What a great afternoon! Dr. Pavesi talked about Silicon Photonics, whilst Dr. Peres showed us how to control terahertz radiation with graphene. The final lecture was about neurosciences. We had the chance to discuss the evolution of Science and important issues such as sustainability and ethics in Science. We ended the day with a social dinner.

17th Scientific Meeting
The 17th Scientific Meeting took place on 2nd of July. The talk, given by Dr. Manuel Marques, focused on the limits of spectral resolution in optical measurements. As usual, here are some pictures of this event!
16th Scientific Meeting
On June, 17th we had a talk held by Dr Marcelino Pousa. It was a very interesting discussion about the challenges in the Telecomunications Field! Here are some pictures of the event!
Student Chapter @ AOP2014
The UP SPIE Student Chapter was at the II International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics that took place from the 26th to the 30th May 2014, at Aveiro, Portugal! It was another opportunity to publicize our chapter, the mission and events!
