The Iberoamerican Optics Meeting/ Latinamerican Meeting on Optics, Lasers and Applications, RIAO/OPTILAS, for a long time already became the reference Optics meeting in the Ibero-american region and our main window to the World, that widely recognizes the decisive importance of Iberoamerica' contribution to the development of Optics and Photonics.
RIAO/OPTILAS is the major scientific meeting in Optics and Photonics in Latinamerica. It is a privileged forum for friendly intense committed discussions and sharing of ideas and experiences in all fields of optics and for the establishment of so many sound and long lasting cooperation and personal relationships among Iberoamerican institutions, academics and researchers from all over the World.

The Student Chapter will be involved in a number of student activities happening throughout the conference, which will take place in Porto from July 22nd to the 26th:

Students Welcome Reception

This event will take place at the University of Porto Science Museum on the day before the start of the conference (Sunday, July 21st, 5 PM). Even though it is targeted at the student participants of RIAO-OPTILAS, it will be open to all the conference participants, and will serve as a starting point for all the activities that will take place throughout the week. Participants will be able to roam around the Museum's Exploratorium, which will also feature a specifically-tailored exhibition of the Museum's collection of old scientific instruments, and socialise over a cup of coffee.

Entrepreneurship session

This event will take place on Wednesday morning, as one of the parallel sessions of RIAO-OPTILAS.

Plenary session with two speakers:

  • Duncan T. Moore (University of Rochester, USA - invited SPIE Student Chapter talk), Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers
  • Gerd Hausler (Erlangan University, Germany), Research, entrepreneurship and the virtue of limits

Round table

(chaired by Alexandra Xavier)

  • Duncan T. Moore (University of Rochester, USA)
  • Gerd Hausler (Erlangan University, Germany)
  • Barry Shoop (US Military Academy & Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA)
  • Luis Alberto (Fibersensing, Portugal)
  • João José Pinto Ferreira (MIETE - Mestrado em Inovação e Empreendedorismo Tecnológico, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Portugal)

Visit to Fibersensing

On Wednesday afternoon (July 24th, 3 PM), the Chapter will provide transport and arrange a visit to Fibersensing, a world leader in the development, production and installation of advanced monitoring systems based on optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor technology.

SEON organisation

SEON is a joint event organized by INESC TEC (coordinated by INESC Porto) and IT - Aveiro
(Telecommunications Institute of Aveiro).
This meeting aims to provide young researchers with the opportunity to take part in a technical meeting and to experience the process of submitting and presenting a conference paper. It also provides and encourages the exchange of ideas between colleagues in academia and in industry, in the rapidly evolving field of Photonics. In addition, there will be prizes for the two best submitted papers in Telecom and Sensors.

This year, SEON will be wholly organised by the Student Chapter; and it will take place during the main conference (Thursday, July 25th).
